Annual Partnership Retreat: discussions on NDCs and transparency (31 August - 7 September, Cape Town, South Africa)
From 31 August to 7 September 2016, 32 participants from 22 countries, both developing and developed, as well as representatives from the UNFCCC secretariat, science and implementing organisations, came together in Cape Town to discuss about the topic ‘From MRV to an enhanced transparency framework in the context of NDC implementation’.
Countries from Asia and Pacific discuss progress on NDC implementation
From 26 to 27 July 2016 the third Regional Workshop of the International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV took place in Vinh Phuc, Viet Nam. It focused on ‘Unpacking (I)NDCs – identifying, prioritising, planning and implementing mitigation and adaptation measures’.
Regional Dialogue on Nationally Determined Contributions - Latin America & the Caribbean
On 19-21 July, the dialogue convened government representatives from the Latin America & Caribbean region and international organisations/experts involved in NDC implementation.
Reflecting on the experience of supporting the development of INDCs
Over 30 partner countries have received support with developing their Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Environment Ministry implemented by GIZ, UNDP, Climate Analytics, CCAP, Ricardo AEA, and CAOS.
20th Meeting of the International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV
On the afternoon of Sunday 22 May 2016 in the margins of the SB44 in Bonn the International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV held its 20th jubilee event – meeting for the first time after the adoption of the Paris Agreement last year.
Dialogue on operationalising NDCs
Many countries are currently focused on determining how they can achieve national implementation of the Paris Agreement and the goals that they have set out within their (Intended) Nationally Determined Contributions ((I)NDCs). A number of events have already been held in order to promote dialogue on this issue, including several workshops and conferences by the International Partnership for Mitigation and MRV and its cooperation partners. More events are planned for the coming months.
Kenya capitalises on renewable energy to extend energy access and business development
As one of the fastest growing economies on the African continent, Kenya has been dubbed the powerhouse of the African continent. According to its Vision 2030, the country strives for an ambitious economic transformation and aims to join the ranks of newly industrialized middle-income countries rank within the next 15 years. Meanwhile Kenya is set to double its population to 81 million people by 2050. This enormous change will entail increased energy use and emissions, which Kenya has set to address with a transition towards a low carbon development pathway.

Supporting the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in partner countries
The Paris Agreement needs to be implemented along with the NDCs that lie at its heart and encompass national policies, measures, and actions in all countries. In this context, the German Federal Ministry of Environment (BMUB) set up an NDC Support Cluster as part of its International Climate Initiative (IKI). The cluster pools together projects from around 30 different countries. It aims to support developing countries in preparing the implementation and rapid attainment of the goals set in their respective NDCs.
Anglophone African Regional Workshop on “Converting INDCs into action: the role of NAMAs in INDC implementation” (2-4 May 2016, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia)
The workshop aimed to capitalize on the momentum of the Paris Agreement and facilitated discussion on converting INDCs into tangible, ambitious and implementable mitigation policies, programs and actions.
