COP22: The IKI NCD Support Cluster is presented

The nationally determined contributions (NDCs) were the focus of many events during the climate change negotiations in Marrakesh, including a presentation by the NDC Support Cluster of the German Federal Environment Ministry’s (BMUB) International Climate Initiative (IKI). On the first day of negotiations at a side event in the EU Pavilion, the BMUB and the organisations represented in the Cluster (CDKN, ECN, GIZ, LEDS GP, NewClimate Institute, SouthSouthNorth, UNDP, WRI) presented their plans for working with partner countries in implementing their NDCs and introduced the first instrument developed by the NDC Cluster – the NDC Helpdesk. The side event was met with great interest.

Norbert Gorißen, who heads the International Climate Finance, International Climate Initiative division in the BMUB, began by providing some background information on the Cluster’s founding: He described the NDC Cluster as a cooperative and programmatic approach designed to support the implementation of NDCs in a targeted and internationally coordinated manner. He explicitly mentioned the NDC Partnership, which the NDC Cluster will contribute to significantly.

Next, representatives of SouthSouthNorth, the World Resources Institute and the NewClimate Institute presented the NDC Cluster priorities in the areas of sectoral approaches, financing and data and transparency. In the subsequent discussion, the guests confirmed the Cluster’s direction and emphasised that it is important to closely align support with the priorities of the partner country in question.

Finally, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH presented the Cluster’s joint NDC Helpdesk. Government institutions from developing countries and emerging economies can use this tool to get rapid, tailored advice on NDC implementation.
